Discussion:
Kiho'alu? What Kiho'alu?

Some years ago, I gave up going to the so-called "Kiho'alu" festival
because Milton Lau was allowing any freakin thing to pass for slack
key. I thought of going this year but, after viewing parts of it on
KITV, I'm glad I didn't.

The perfomances I saw:

Britni P: sounded like an advanced amateur

Dennis K: good as always

Hap: Barry F usually prances around like a chimp. Does he have any idea
how ridiculous he looks? Played some godawful crap. More intent on
flash than anything musical.

Maunaloa: Bobby must have been trying to compete with Barry. Sigh.

Kaukahi: wtf was that? Touristy fluff?

Of these only Britni and Dennis were good.

Bad as they might have been, I would have loved to see that here on the
mainland.

Which brings up the question; this company selling Hawaiian TV via internet
(pay $125 for the box, then I think $15 a month, and you get a bunch of
Hawaii's TV stations on your TV like cable, only via the internet)....
anybody here tried that yet?

Does it work well? Dropouts? Good picture and sound? Sounds like a good
idea.

....Curious.

Not familiar with it. Where did you see it?
Not hard to find; it's the top paid link in a Google search for "hawaiian
tv."

http://www.tvfromhawaii.com/

I'm guessing that they're getting about VHS video quality by going up to
about a 600k video stream. I've watched lots of 600k video (that's about
the rate you get watching news on CBS.com, or any of the surfinglive.com
videos; it's not quite full NTSC video quality, but looks quite good,
especially when viewed on your computer so it's not interlaced) and find
it's generally pretty dependable on cable internet; only occasional pauses
and dropouts.

However, I'd imagine that if you spend a few hours a day streaming 600k bits
per second, you'd quickly hear from your ISP with a note about what your
download limit is, and might have to move up to the $99 extra-bad cable
connection to continue.

It's an interesting idea, cable TV via internet. I'm surprised that I only
find it on Hawaiian TV. I imagine there are others (Tokyo TV available
worldwide, for instance) using the same technology, but I've never seen any
others.

So again, any subscribers out there, I'm sure there are a bunch of us would
like to get a user's review of the system.

All those channels, and no Hawaiian music. Just like XM and Sirius.

Said what? You would rather listen to "bad" Hawaiian music that none?

Sigh!

Well said! Rotten weather in Kailua-Kona still beats a perfect
winter's day in Boston.

I was there. I traveled 5000+ miles to be there. Maybe I'm too much
of a haole to "get it", but I didn't find it as awful as you did.

Did you see John Keawe's appearance? Hardly amateur! John, Britni
and Dennis were probably the best of the lot but none of it was really
bad. At least compared to what passes for live music performance here
in Massachusetts.
